THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RAINFOREST
The beauty and timelessness of a rainforest are indescribable. It is impossible to capture on film, to describe in words. Rainforests have evolved over millions of years to turn into the richness in both animal and plant species. These resources have included basic food supplies, clothing, shelter, fuel, spices, and medicine for all those who have lived in the forest. Sadly, it has taken only a century of human intervention to destroy what nature designed to last forever. in 1950, about 15 percent of the Earth's land surface was covered by rainforest. Today, more than half has already gone up in smoke. More than 20 percent of the Amazon rainforest is already gone. It is estimated that the Amazon alone is vanishing at a rate of 6000 square miles a year. If nothing is done the entire Amazon could well be gone within fifty years.
The Argument
The wwf are fighting to save the amazon "the rainforest is vital for the health of the planet" they also want other countries to help save the natural beauty of the rainforest but if the rainforest is destroyed the future of the human race will be bleak. The Amerindians are living in the rainforest and said "we’ve lived in the rainforest for 100s of years" they used to have a population of 6,000,000 now they only have 200,000 due to deforestation and loggers disease because the Amerindians are not as immune as us to diseases.
On the other hand groups like loggers and ranchers want to use the rainforest for revenue and profit purposes also 400 landless people could clear land for their homes they could start to earn a living and do their bit on destroying the rainforest. Cattle ranchers say that they need to chop down the rainforest to raise the cattle and the beef is used in places like McDonalds and KFC.it earns Brazil £2.5 BN a year.
My opinion on the rainforest is that it should be left alone. Loggers only use mature trees so large areas of land are removed and only a few trees are used. The problem for loggers is rich countries like Britain are not buying wood like mahogany from the rainforest so the less of us that buy wood from the rainforest, the less logging will take place.
